On October 31, 2020, the Emerson Speech and Debate Team competed in the 1st Southern California Junior Forensics League tournament of the season. It was completely virtual and live. Our kids have been working extremely hard in AT and even created their own after school club with Emerson Alumni to help train each other. I am so proud of our team. 9 of the 24 members of the team broke to finals and placed. Here are the results.
Open SPAR – Daniel Farzinpour 10th, 4th Jesse Abrams, 3rd Aaron Eliassian, 1st Elijah Chen
Novice SPAR – Diana Barksdale 6th, Estella Briones 2nd, Sophie Soltis 1st
Storytelling – Drew Stern 6th
Declamation – Kaelyn Simon 3rd
SPAR is a debate event and many of the resolutions were about issues of our current time. They had to argue for or against a resolution despite their personal opinion about it. Amazingly, two of our 6th graders took 1st and 2nd place in Novice which is still filled with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders! Declamation and Storytelling are more interpretive and memorized events that require stage presence and acting.
Congratulations to all of the winners! Go Panthers!
