A special letter from Ms. Stuback:
These past few weeks, the Emerson speech and debaters have been hard at work. Juggling academics, extracurriculars, and everyday life these students trained in both AT and after school clubs to prepare for their greatest challenge yet. On the weekend of May 21-23, the Emerson Speech and Debate team competed at states. Competing against schools across the entire state of California, our kids demonstrated that Emerson is a force to be reckoned with. Taking 7th in the state with her Dramatic Interpretation piece was Kaelyn Simon. Coming in 4th with her Storytelling piece was Elsa Siefker. Advancing to the quarter finals in one of the most competitive events, SPAR, was Estella Briones. Taking 3rd in the entire state with her very own original Informative piece on Dreams was Sidney D’Arceaux. Coming in 2nd in another highly competitive event with her tearjerker Dramatic Interpretation was Layla Sadrieh. Look out, up and coming 6th grader Sophia Soltis earned 2nd place against all other middle schoolers in our state for her poetry piece.
This weekend June 3-6, the Emerson Speech and Debate team has been competing at the final and most difficult competition of the season, Nationals. In years past this was strictly for 8th graders. Our team has shown such dedication and promise this year, that I opened the event up to all grades. I am so proud of all of our kids that participated in this final competition of the 2020-2021 season. 5 out of the 11 events we entered placed. That means that nearly 50% of our entries placed in the top six of the entire nation. Taking Bronze was Layla Sadrieh and earning Gold was Kaelyn Simon with their emotionally charged Dramatic Interpretation pieces. Coming in Bronze with their incredibly entertaining Storytelling pieces were Merrick Cheung, Elsa Siefker, and Samayah Lewis.
Although this competition marks the last one I will attend as the official coach of the Emerson Speech and Debate team, the last four years have been the most phenomenal journey. I benefited and grew as an educator from being a part of this enriching program. I would also like to thank the entire speech and debate community including all of the students and families for making it such a success and pleasure to be a part of! I know this program will continue to thrive even as I move to the next step of my own educational career. I will always be here for the team and all of the families involved. This team has definitely been one of the highlights of my Emerson experience!
Congratulations again to the 2020-2021 Emerson Speech and Debate Team!
